The First Spiritualist Church of Austin has a rich history dating back to 1926 when it first opened its doors to the public. This church was founded by the Reverend August Cervin, a Swedish immigrant, who was accompanied by his wife, Jennie, who was a clairvoyant medium, healer, and a reverend in her own right. Together, they established a community that believed in the existence of spirits and the afterlife.

Initially, Austin Spiritualists held their meetings at the old Labor Temple located at 10th and Brazos. However, as the congregation grew, they needed a more permanent space to hold their services. The Driskill Hotel became another venue for their gatherings from time to time. It wasn’t until 1941 that the church was able to purchase its own location in Hyde Park, providing the congregation with a permanent home.

When Reverend Cervin passed away in 1940, it was his daughter, Rev. Alma Cervin Johnson, who took over as the leader of the church. She continued her father’s legacy and led the congregation until her death in 1965. During her years of service, the church thrived and grew, welcoming new members and expanding its reach throughout the community.

Today, the First Spiritualist Church of Austin remains an active and vibrant community that is dedicated to exploring the spiritual world and connecting with the afterlife. The church continues to be a place of comfort and healing for those who seek to connect with the divine and find meaning in their lives. Through its teachings and practices, the church provides a safe and welcoming space for all who wish to explore their spirituality and connect with others who share their beliefs.
